While much of the city's news along with the rest of the country has been focused on COVID-19, headlines are starting to resemble some sense of normalcy again.

Three of Rice University's programs the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Jones Graduate School of Business, and Brown School of Engineering are teaming up to provide undergraduate students an opportunity to minor in entrepreneurship.

"Entrepreneurship and the creation of new businesses and industries are critical to Houston and Texas' future prosperity and quality of life," says Yael Hochberg, Rice finance professor who leads Lilie, in a release. "Rice students continuously seek to lead change and build organizations that can have real impact on our world. In today's new and uncertain world, the skills and frameworks taught in the new minor are particularly important."

According to a news release, the minor's curriculum will provide students with professional skills within entrepreneurship, such as problem solving, understanding customers and staff, communication, and more. The program will be housed in Lilie, which features a coworking space, graduate and undergraduate entrepreneurship courses, the annual H. Albert Napier Rice Launch Challenge, and other courses.

CompTIA has released its Cyberstates 2020 report that identifies Houston as No. 12 in the country for tech jobs. However, the Bayou City was ranked No. 38 for job percent growth. Austin and Dallas appear in the top 10 of each of the Cybercities rankings.

According to the report, Houston has a net total of 235,802 tech jobs, an increase of 826 jobs between 2018 and 2019. This figure means a growth of 25,904 jobs between 2019 and 2010. The full report is available online.

While Houston misses the top 10 metros, Texas ranks No. 2 for net tech employment and net tech employment growth. The Lone Star State came in at No. 4 for projected percent change in the next decade. The state was also recognized as No. 2 for number of tech businesses.

Baylor College of Medicine researchers along with colleagues at four other institutions are testing to see if the bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine, known as BCG, can work against COVID-19.

"Epidemiological studies show that if you're BCG vaccinated, you have a decreased rate of other infections," says Dr. Andrew DiNardo, assistant professor of medicine infectious diseases at Baylor, in a news release.

The vaccine has been found to help protect against yellow fever and influenza, and, according to DiNardo, the vaccine could show 30 to 50 percent improvement in immune response in patients with the coronavirus. The team is currently looking for subjects to participate in a clinical trial to test the vaccine.

While research is preliminary, the theory is that BCG changes the way the body responds to a pathogen, according to the release.

"Think of DNA like a ball of yarn," DiNardo explains in the release. "Some pieces of the ball of yarn are open and able to be expressed. Other pieces are wrapped up tight and hidden away, and those genes are repressed. It's a normal way for cells to turn certain genes on and off. BCG opens up certain parts of this ball of yarn and allows the immune system to act quicker."

Since entering the Houston market last year, Silicon Valley's Plug and Play Tech Center has hosted numerous events, named its first cohort, and hired Payal Patel to lead the local operations. However, the local operations still, until recently, lacked a plan for a physical space in town.

"Plug and Play intends to set up its permanent office in Houston in Rice's Ion development," says Patel in a statement. "We have engaged in preliminary discussions with Rice Management Company to secure office space for the building's expected Q1 2021 opening."

Until then, says Patel, who is director of corporate partnerships for Plug and Play in Houston, the Plug and Play team will have its base at Station Houston, which recently merged with Austin-based Capital Factory. At present, the local team is hiring to build up its team and has five open jobs on HTX Talent, a job portal for Houston tech.

A University of Houston mechanical engineer has been selected for a Guggenheim Fellowship. Pradeep Sharma is the only recipient in the engineering category.

The M.D. Anderson Chair Professor of mechanical engineering and chairman of the department, Sharma uses mathematics and technology to breakdown physical phenomena across a number of disciplines.

The Guggeinheim Foundation has funded more than $375 million in fellowships to over 18,000 individuals since its inception in 1925. This year, the organization selected 173 individuals.

"It's exceptionally encouraging to be able to share such positive news at this terribly challenging time," Sharma says in a news release from UH. "The artists, writers, scholars and scientific researchers supported by the fellowship will help us understand and learn from what we are enduring individually and collectively."

HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division has announced that it will be participating in a national study to see if plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients can help current COVID patients in severe conditions.

"We are proud to take part in this important study. We are asking for the help of our community to spread awareness about plasma donation for patients facing COVID-19 not only in Houston, South Texas and Corpus Christi, but also around the world," says Mujtaba Ali-Khan, chief medical officer at HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division, in a news release.

Per the study, the following HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division Hospitals will be participating:

"This trial is just the first step, but hopefully it will help us determine if plasma transfusions can be a treatment for critically ill patients with COVID-19," says Carlos Araujo-Preza, MD, critical care medical director at HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball, in the release.

Dr. Araujo-Preza safely discharged his first plasma patient last week. The patient is recovering from home following their treatment.

The hospital system is looking for eligible volunteers to donate plasma via the American Red Cross to help treat current patients.

Israeli researchers say they have developed an intravenous injection to fight hospital superbugs bacteria that are resistant to most current antibiotics.

Yechezkel Barenholz of the Hebrew University of Jerusalems Faculty of Medicine and Hadassah Medical School, told The Times of Israel that the treatment is a game-changer in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The treatment could be particularly useful as the world fights the coronavirus pandemic, with many patients developing secondary bacterial infections.

A study published in The Lancet, a top British medical journal, monitored a sample in which one in two coronavirus patients who died had developed a secondary infection.

Coronavirus patients are often given antibiotics as a preventative measure, but there are still cases of infections from bacteria that have developed resistance to antibiotics, said Barenholz, who heads the Hadassah Medical Schools Laboratory of Membrane and Liposome Research

While coronavirus patients are particularly vulnerable, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a general concern of doctors. They are a major threat to global health, according to the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control.

With funding from Americas National Institutes of Health and the help of Germanys Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, Barenholzs team used nanotechnology to develop an injection form of mupirocin. It reports that the common topical antibiotic drug, often sold as Bactroban ointment, has shown unusually strong abilities to fight superbugs.

We found people who are infected by bacteria that are hard to treat with other drugs, then infected animals with their bacteria, and successfully treated the animals using this drug, said Barenholz. The bacteria tested included a strand of gonorrhoea for which an antibiotic has not yet been identified, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which responds to a limited range of antibiotics, that are prone to side effects.

Barenholz commented: Its very exciting given that weve treated a bacteria that is resistant to all antibiotics but isnt resistant to this drug.

He said that mupirocin has long been known for its strong antibiotic qualities, but as it could only be rubbed on the skin, had limited use for treating hospital infections. The drug we worked on is the same [as the ointment] but we changed the way it is delivered, enabling it to be injected, he said. Now it can be used selectively, to reach the tissue of the infection.

This was a hard process because, without intense modification, mupirocin normally dissolves as soon as it is injected into the body.

The reformulated drug is called nano-mupirocin, because of complex nanotechnology used in the process.

It involved enveloping the drug in a human-made liposome, which Barenholz describes as a very small ball, a nano ball, with a shell, water in the inside, and the drug inside the water. It also includes a mechanism which is akin to a tiny pump that sucks the drug in very high concentrations to exactly where it needs to go.

He said that this advanced method for administering the drug makes it unlike most other antibiotics, and predicted that it will mean that if bacteria develop resistance to his drug, it will be a slow process. He explained: Because the antibiotic is in a liposome, the body has less exposure to it than is normal to antibiotics, therefore [bacterial] resistance would grow more slowly.

Barenholz said that the injection is being prepared for clinical testing, and it could be approved within four months. The hope is that when there is a second coronavirus wave, this will be a tool of physicians to prevent the impact of resistant bacteria.

There arent a lot of local success stories in the current COVID-19-influenced economic climate but all signs are pointing to a Cape Breton company behind an increasingly popular online delivery system as one of them.

We were growing before this but this is certainly pushed along even more, said Click2Order co-founder and CEO Matt Stewart.

We decreased our fees when all of this started because restaurants were so much more reliant on services like ours. We didnt want to come across as trying to take advantage of a situation. I think thats probably also led to some restaurants using us versus other services. I think we looked at the human aspect of it as well and made sure we werent going to gouge the customer or be opportunistic.

The delivery service that gives a restaurant its own branded online ordering system was one of the winners of the inaugural Spark Innovation Challenge for early startup companies, held in Cape Breton in 2014. Its been growing ever since.

Bob Pelley remembers a competitive inaugural Spark competition that saw Sona Nanotech win the top prize of $50,000. That Sydney startup company is now based in Halifax and working on a rapid test kit for COVID-19.

I do recall that Matt and his team, they won $10,000 at the time, and it was one of those things where I recall the judges being totally impressed, said Pelley, the regional manager for Innovacorp, the organization behind the competitions.

One of our concerns was would they be able to do something with $10,000. To their credit, they were able to build a system and launch it and grow it year over year.

Pelley has family in Corner Brook, N.L., where Click2Order has recently launched and hes said there's excitement around its arrival in the community.

Hes also heard from other markets, including Halifax, where it has yet to launch but where there is great interest in its arrival.

Ive read some articles that have said this type of situation is going to lead to a lot of regional players like Click2Order because of that gouging aspect ... of the larger brands in the space. It will see what happens when things get back to normal.

These days, Cape Breton clients of Click2Order include franchisees and individual and independent eateries.

When Freshii opened on Charlotte Street, Sydney in August, the owners of the "health casual" restaurant considered all delivery and online options before deciding on CB Eats and Click2Order because they wanted to support a Cape Breton-based company. Rates were also better than competitors and their customer service has proven itself time and time again.

Matt Stewart has been super awesome to deal with, the drivers have been really good, always on time and very professional, said Kathleen MacDonald, co-owner of the restaurant. Theres not much to complain about them, honestly.

The app and an associated delivery service with variations on the brand CB Eats have spread across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and Alberta.

Sydney is the only spot where we manage the fleet and we never used to, Stewart said of the CB Eats delivery service. Its something we have recently done but in Antigonish we have a partnership with a taxi company.

When Click2Order broke into the Alberta restaurant market in Grand Prairie in 2017, an existing delivery network was utilized while branding the entire hybrid service that used their application as GP Eats.

Some of the third party apps that were already in place, their fees were quite high, sometimes as high as 25-30 per cent, which is basically the entire margin of a restaurant.Most of them lose money on those transactions.

Partnerships also exist in other places where existing taxi and delivery services are available.

Thats the norm for our operation, partnering with existing fleets that are already up and going and have the capacity to handle orders and it works well for both of us.

The Cape Breton-developed software integrates all necessary communication between restaurants and the local delivery fleet.

Word of mouth and some past media articles have helped get word of Click2Order out to other restaurants. Stewart said existing clients, especially those that are part of franchises, have also been a source of new business.

Setting up their system for new customers often depends on the complexity of a menu and shipping times for associated equipment but can take as little as 24-48 hours.

If you are in our backyard we can have it to you the same day but if its New Brunswick or out west it can be three to four days but certainly in that time frame we can have restaurants up and going so that when the equipment arrives, they can theoretically turn it on that day and start.

There are five full-time employees associated with the Click2Order company and a further 10-15 who are part of the CB Eats delivery service.

If you factor in the independent fleets and drivers associated with Click2Order across the country, some 50 or more people are employed.

We are not a success story yet but we are certainly trying to get there.
