The startup claims to be the worlds top supplier of graphene and plans to release a non-flammable, environmentally friendly lithium battery that can charge 18 times faster than anything that is currently available on the market within the next year.

Battery and graphene technology startup Nanotech Energy just closed a $27.5 million funding round at a post-money valuation of $227.5 million, according to the company. The investors were not disclosed. The company has raised more than $30 million since its 2014 founding.

Jack Kavanaugh, CEO of the company, spoke with pv magazine. His startup claims to be the worlds top supplier of graphene and plans to release a non-flammable, environmentally friendly lithium battery that can charge 18 times faster than anything that is currently available on the market within the next year.

Kavanaugh said, We are confident that we have a one-of-a-kind, industry-changing product that will impact the technologies and bottom lines of multiple end-user markets.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Nanotech Energy is co-founded by Kavanaugh and UCLA scientists Richard Kaner and Maher El-Kady.

Although investors in this round were not disclosed, Kavanaugh, along with fellow-board members Mahi De Silva and Robert Snukal are part of Multiverse Investment Fund, a minority investor in the battery startup, according to Pitchbook.

Graphene!

Graphene can improve the surface area and electronic conductivity of the lithium-ion battery anode and cathode. According to the company, these nanostructured electrodes enable a new generation of lithium-ion batteries with excellent power density, exceptionally high energy density and long cycling life.

The startup uses a solution processing method that allows graphene to be coated on any substrate along with a laser process step that forms a graphene foam. The company had originally applied its graphene technology to making better supercapacitors but now focuses on its super battery.

Nanotech Energy is commercially shipping graphene inks and the CEO stresses that it is producing real graphene, not graphite. Science Mag points out that much of what is sold as graphene is often small pieces of bulk graphite despite its $300 per gram price. Graphite is used as structural support in tennis rackets and bicycles but its not the one-atom-thick sheet of monolayer graphene needed to make a better battery.

The CEO said that fabricating its own graphene allows the startup to be vertically integrated. He adds that the firm can produce kilos per day compared to the grams coming from other vendors.

The CEO said that the companys technology is being applied to various lithium formulations, as well as a non-lithium, environmentally friendly, water-based electrolyte.

Market entry and business plan

Although Nanotech Energys $27.5 million is a decent pile of money, its about $1 billion short of the investment necessary for a large battery factory.

And that leaves the company to decide if it wants to be a battery builder, or at a fraction of the capital raise an electrode supplier to battery builders.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Nanotech Security (CVE:NTS) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. Let's start with an examination of the business's cash, relative to its cash burn.

(1) Lithium-ion batteries

The lithium-ion battery, which today powers everything from our smartphones to our autonomous cars, was first proposed in the 1970s. It couldnt make it to market until the 1990s, and didnt begin to reach maturity until the past few years.

An exponential technology, these batteries have been dropping in price for three decades, plummeting 90 percent between 1990 and 2010, and 80 percent since. Concurrently, theyve seen an eleven-fold increase in capacity.

But producing enough of them to meet demand has been an ongoing problem. Tesla has stepped up to the challenge: one of the companys Gigafactories in Nevada churns out 20 gigawatts of energy storage per year, marking the first time weve seen lithium-ion batteries produced at scale.

Musk predicts 100 Gigafactories could store the energy needs of the entire globe. Other companies are moving quickly to integrate this technology as well: Renault is building a home energy storage based on their Zoe batteries, BMWs 500 i3 battery packs are being integrated into the UKs national energy grid, and Toyota, Nissan, and Audi have all announced pilot projects.

Lithium-ion batteries will continue to play a major role in renewable energy storage, helping bring down solar and wind energy prices to compete with those of coal and gasoline.

(2) Graphene

Derived from the same graphite found in everyday pencils, graphene is a sheet of carbon just one atom thick. It is nearly weightless, but200 timesstronger than steel. Conducting electricity and dissipating heat faster than any other known substance, this super-material has transformative applications.

Graphene enables sensors, high-performance transistors, and even gel that helps neurons communicate in the spinal cord. Many flexible device screens, drug delivery systems, 3D printers, solar panels, and protective fabric use graphene.

As manufacturing costs decrease, this material has the power to accelerate advancements of all kinds.

(3) Perovskite

Want to add solar to your house? Weve got nano-coatings that capture the suns energy.

Nanomaterials make lighter automobiles, airplanes, baseball bats, helmets, bicycles, luggage, power toolsthe list goes on. Researchers at Harvard built a nanoscale 3D printer capable of producing miniature batteries less than one millimeter wide. And if you dont like those bulky VR goggles, researchers are now using nanotech to create smart contact lenses with a resolution six times greater than that of todays smartphones.

And even more is coming. Right now, in medicine, drug delivery nanobots are proving especially useful in fighting cancer. Computing is a stranger story, as a bioengineer at Harvard recently stored 700 terabytes of data in a single gram of DNA.

On the environmental front, scientists can take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into super-strong carbon nanofibers for use in manufacturing. A tiny sail made of the thinnest material known one carbon-atom-thick graphene has passed initial tests designed to show that it could be a viable material to make solar sails for spacecraft.

Light sails are one of the most promising existing space propulsion technologies that could enable us to reach other star systems within many decades.

Traditional spacecraft carry fuel to power their journeys and use complex orbital maneuvers around other planets. But the weight of the fuel makes them difficult to launch and intricate flyby maneuvers considerably lengthen the journey.

Solar sails need no fuel. Spacecraft equipped with them are thus much lighter and easier to launch.

Two spacecraft flown over the past decade have already demonstrated the technology, but they used sails made of polyimide and of mylar, a polyester film.

Graphene is much lighter. To test whether it could be used as a sail, researchers used a scrap just 3 millimeters across.

They dropped it from a 100-m tall tower in Bremen, Germany, to test whether it worked under vacuum and in microgravity.

Once the sail was in free-fall effectively eliminating the effects of gravity they shone a series of laser lights onto it, to see whether it would act as a solar sail.

Shining a 1 watt laser made the sail accelerate by up to 1 m/s2, similar to the acceleration of an office lift, but for solar sails the acceleration continues as long as sunlight keeps hitting the sails, taking spacecraft to higher and higher speeds.

Making graphene is relatively simple and could be easily scaled up to kilometer-wide sails, though the deployment of a giant sail will be a serious challenge, says Santiago Cartamil-Bueno, leader of the GrapheneSail team and director of SCALE Nanotech, a research start-up company operating in Estonia and Germany.

SCALE Nanotech is now looking for strategic partners to scale up the technology for an eventual test in space. The product development of the sail technology is currently accelerated through ESAs Business Incubator Centre in Hessen and Baden-Wrttemberg, Germany.

Astrid Orr of ESAs human spaceflight research program oversees physical science experiments in weightlessness for human and robotic exploration.

Science with(out) gravity drop towers. Gravity affects everything we do on Earth but we know surprisingly little about how it works and how it affects life. Until recently scientists had no way of experimenting without gravity to understand what life would be like without it. From the moment an experiment is let go at the top of a drop tower until it hits the padded ground beneath, the experiment is free of the influences of gravity. Dropping graphene and shooting it with lasers is fascinating. To think that this research could help scientists to send instruments through the solar system and, if one dares to dream, to distant star systems in years to come is the icing on the cake.

In 2011, a Wisconsin couple was looking for a cleaning product that could protect their home from germs, even after the cleaning supplies were returned to their cupboards. After scouring the soap and cleaning compound industry, they decided to create their own.

Enter AGent+ Cleaner Protectants from AGent Plus Solutions LLC. These naturally derived cleaning products, with multi-purpose and hard surface solution, have a water-based formulation that cleans with citrus oils and isopropyl alcohol-like typical cleaning products.

The AGent+ difference comes from adding a bonding agent along with nano-scale copper and silver to protect the cleaned surfaces for up to three days. The small particles provide a high surface-to-volume ratio, helping consumers to use less product and have a smaller environmental impact. This unique use of nanotechnology was awarded patents in the United States and Canada.

Competitors dont offer products with the same ability to protect surfaces for up to three days, based on results from numerous independent studies.

Controlling the growth of microbes has become top-of-mind for many people during the COVID-19 pandemic. With consumers looking for products that will keep their families safe, founders see a huge opportunity in the market.

The soap and cleaning compound industry generated over $60 billion in 2016, with 57 percent and 43 percent representing the household and commercial segments, respectively.

Because of AGent+s ability to diminish the cross-contamination and microbial growth risks in high-traffic places with many people, they have focused on entertainment venues to enter the market and gain awareness. A pair of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) researchers are part of a three-institution team funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to further develop a tularemia vaccine.

Nick Fischer and Amy Rasley will collaborate with University of New Mexico and Tulane National Primate Research Center scientists under a five-year, $7.5 million DTRA grant. Their work will build on nanotechnology called nanolipoprotein particles (NLPs) developed at LLNL for delivering vaccines and drugs inside the human body.

Fischer and Rasley have demonstrated the ability of a subunit vaccine, incorporating different antigens from the Francisella tularensis bacteria into a single particle, to protect against high doses of bacteria when aerosolized. F. tularensis is the bacteria that causes the disease tularemia, more commonly known as rabbit fever.

We had confidence that we could develop a tularemia vaccine that would work, Fischer said. But it took eight years of hard work and multiple failures to get us where we are today.

Rasley said the demonstration is only a first step but serves as a critical advance that researchers have been attempting to achieve for more than 30 years.

This project leverages expertise our scientists have worked hard to perfect and highlights our ability to contribute to the Labs national security mission, Kris Kulp, division leader for the Labs Biosciences and Biotechnology Division, said. The collaborations formed with our university partners are key to producing and testing this novel vaccine. We anticipate this project will significantly enhance our nations ability to protect our soldiers.
